The following are some of my favorite gun quotes. Some of them show why we need guns. Some show why the Founding Fathers knew we had to have them. Some show why dictators (and idiots in Congress) don’t want you to have any. All of them make me thankful for my Second Amendment rights. If you’re thankful for your Second Amendment rights tweet, stumble, bookmark, and share this list with a friend.
1.”A free people ought to be armed.”
2.”To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them…”
~Richard Henry Lee
3.”The right of self-defense is the first law of nature; in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest possible limits. … and [when] the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any color or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction.”
~St. George Tucker
4.”[The Constitution preserves] the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation (where) the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.”
5.”Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples’ liberty’s teeth.”
1. Banning guns works, which is why New York, DC, and Chicago cops need guns.
2. Washington DC’s low murder rate of 80.6 per 100,000 is due to strict gun control, and Arlington, VA’s high murder rate of 1.6 per 100,000 is due to the lack of gun control.
3. Statistics showing high murder rates justify gun control but statistics showing increasing murder rates after gun control are “just statistics.”
4. The Brady Bill and the Assault Weapons Ban, both of which went into effect in 1994, are responsible for the decrease in violent crime rates, which have been declining since 1991.
5. We must get rid of guns because a deranged lunatic may go on a shooting spree at any time and anyone who would own a gun out of fear of such a lunatic is paranoid.
Here in the great state of Tennessee we recently had a news organization publish a list of / link to the information publicly available on the Internet containing the details of individuals who possess a handgun carry permit. This has caused quite a bit of outrage from permit holders who either didn’t believe this information was openly available or who believe that most people would not be able to find the information so easily if not for this news agency making it easier. Permit holders are especially concerned about what the effects of this public data may be.
I’ve already talked about the problems with the Obama administration’s goal to require that all firearms be child-proofed as well as the misinformation about the “Gun Show Loophole” (That isn’t a loop hole at all). I wanted to finish this series with a discussion on the Federal Assault Weapons Ban. The sad truth of this legislation that Obama administration would like to make permanent is that it doesn’t do anything. This legislation does nothing at all, it did nothing the last time it was enacted except serve as a way for politicians to look tough on guns.
In my previous article discussing the folly of the Obama Administration’s impending legislation I tried to point out the three primary problems that each of their goals share and specifically how these problems apply to the ‘Gun Show Loophole‘. All three of these problems are equally true for the Obama Administration’s goal of requiring all firearms to be ‘child proofed’; The legislation will be ineffective at accomplishing it’s intended goals, it will impede the Second Amendment rights of Americans, and it will further reduce the powers of individual states to create laws commiserate to their citizens.
As Barack Obama begins his presidency gun enthusiasts are paying close attention to the actions of our new President. People like to dabble in conjecture regarding the ways in which the Obama administration will try to inhibit gun owners. However, we don’t have to guess because our new President and his administration have made their goals clear. We can look at the new White House website and find their proposed policies on gun control; they want to remove the ‘gun show loophole’, make guns ‘child proof’, and make the federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent. The problem, however, is that these things will be ineffective in doing what the lawmakers want, will further trample our Second Amendment rights, and worst of all further thrash the rights of individual states to create laws that best fit their unique citizenry.
