Blagojevich Appointed Burris to Obama’s Senate Seat. Why did he accept?

December 30th, 2008

Now that Blagojevich has appointed a replacement for Obama’s senate seat, despite the insistence of nearly every political figure that he not do so, the most interesting question is why did Roland Burris accept? As always, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Burris has to know that there is very little chance of the Senate Democrats allowing his appointment to go through. They have made it publicly known and Obama, the new face of the Democratic party, has backed them on this issue. Burris has a plan, he is counting on name recognition. Everyone will know him now. The amount of media air time this story will get practically guarantees him the seat if he runs in a special election, which he will of course push for in the case that the Senate blocks his appointment. You just can’t beat this kind of free press.

The special election will have no incumbent for Burris to compete with and once it is revealed that the person Blagojevich tried to trade the seat to was not Burris people will accept him as a foregone conclusion through sheer name recognition and vote for him.

Well played Burris, well played.

Hey, I have an idea, why don’t we have an election to choose new representatives when needed?
