Lieberman Keeps Chairmanship

November 19th, 2008

Barack Obama effectively pardoned Joe Lieberman for supporting John McCain for president. Today, the Senate Democratic caucus voted 42 - 13 to let Lieberman keep his spot as the Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman. Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, wanted to punish Lieberman, but Obama asked Reid to “let bygones be bygones.” This is a great move by Obama in my opinion.

While I don’t have the same opinion about many of his ideas, this action is a welcome change to Washington. There was no reason for Lieberman to be punished for supporting another candidate. He still thinks and votes like democrat. Obama’s ability to keep his party in line was a welcome sight. Also, hopefully his calm, above the fray demeanor will steady the chicken littles we have running around  Washington.

We were told over and over by the media and all of Washington that we had to buy this toxic debt to end this financial crisis or the sky would fall. Well guess what, Paulson is done spending money, and he decided not to use any of it to buy mortgages. Either way, the sky didn’t fall. Even so, right now we still have many bigger issues than Lieberman keeping his chairmanship. It seems as though deciding what to do about the coming automaker bailout would be a better use of the our senators’ time.

Let me know what you think about this situation and the way Barack Obama handled it. I think it is a good sign that he stayed above the dirty Washington political games. I think he realizes that he can use all the help he can get, and also that there are more important things to worry about than political paybacks. I didn’t vote for him, but I will respect Obama and stand behind him as our president. I will be sure to point it out when I disagree with him (which will probably be often), but let this serve as an example that I will tell you when he does something right.

This is no surprise to anyone that has read, “Audacity of Hope.”
